Khinaliq, also known as Khinalug or Xinalig, is a remote village in the Quba region of Azerbaijan, nestled high in the Greater Caucasus Mountains at an altitude of approximately 2,350 meters (7,710 feet). This ancient settlement boasts a history stretching back an incredible 5,000 years, with archaeological evidence dating to the Early Bronze Age. Ancient historians like Strabo and Pliny mentioned this village, highlighting its long-standing significance. The village is home to the Khinalug people, who call themselves “Ketid” and speak a unique and isolated language called Khinalug. This language belongs to the Northeast Caucasian family and is unrelated to Azerbaijani. The village's remote location has allowed the Khinalug people to preserve their distinct culture and traditions over millennia.Khinaliq's architecture is as unique as its culture. The stone houses are built on steep mountain slopes, stacked atop one another, with the roof of one house serving as the courtyard for the next. This design maximizes space and provides warmth during the harsh winters. Historically, the Khinalug people practiced semi-nomadic animal husbandry, migrating seasonally with their livestock between high mountain pastures in the summer and warmer lowlands in the winter. Although the 20th century brought Soviet-era collective farming, traditional practices have largely returned since Azerbaijan's independence in 1991.Today, Khinaliq is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts tourists seeking an authentic cultural experience and stunning natural scenery. Visitors can explore the village's ancient stone houses, learn about the Khinalug language and culture, and hike in the surrounding mountains. The village also has a local museum and several ancient mosques and shrines, including a fire temple with Zoroastrian roots.
