Discover more about Lake Göygöl

Lake Göygöl, meaning 'Blue Lake' in Azerbaijani, is a natural lake located in the Goygol District of Azerbaijan, near the city of Ganja. Situated at the foothills of the Murovdag range within the Göygöl National Park, this alpine lake sits 1,556 meters above sea level. Its waters stretch 2,800 meters in length and reach a maximum width of 800 meters, plunging to depths of 96 meters. Formed by a powerful earthquake in 1139, the lake emerged when a landslide from Mount Kapaz blocked the Kürəkçay River. Over time, the dammed waters filled the valley, creating the picturesque lake admired today. The earthquake also led to the formation of seven other lakes in the vicinity. Surrounded by dense forests and mountains, Lake Göygöl offers a tranquil escape and a wealth of recreational activities. Hiking trails wind around the lake's perimeter, offering panoramic views of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains. Visitors can also enjoy boat tours, picnics, birdwatching, and simply soaking in the serene atmosphere. The area is rich in flora and fauna, with over 400 species of trees, plants, and medicinal herbs. The lake itself is home to the Göygöl trout, a unique species that has evolved since the lake's formation. The region has a rich history, with German colonists settling here in the 19th century and founding the town of Helenendorf, later renamed Göygöl. Though the German population was later relocated, their architectural legacy remains visible in the town.
