Getting There

  • Taxi

    From Quba, the most common way to reach Khinalig is by taxi. Shared taxis gather near the Central Bus Station in Quba. A seat in a shared taxi typically costs 15-20 AZN per person, or you can hire the whole car for 50-60 AZN. The journey takes 1.5-2 hours along a steep, paved mountain road. Alternatively, arrange a private transfer through your guesthouse in Khinalig.

    If driving yourself from Baku, take the E119 highway towards Quba (approximately 230 km). From Quba, continue on the paved mountain road to Khinalig (another 1.5-2 hours). Be aware that road conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, especially during winter. Check local conditions before setting out. No tolls apply on this route. Parking is available in the village, but it can be limited.

  • Public Transport

    To reach Khinalig via public transport, take a minibus from Baku International Bus Terminal to Quba (approximately 3 hours 20 minutes, 5.30 AZN). From Quba, hire a taxi to Khinalig as there are no direct buses. The taxi ride costs 50-60 AZN and takes 1.5-2 hours.

The Khinalig State Historical-Architectural and Ethnography Reserve protects the ancient village of Khinalig, one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in the Caucasus, dating back over 5,000 years. The Khinalig State Historical-Architectural and Ethnography Reserve was established in 2007 to safeguard the village's unique architecture and living culture. In 2023, it was expanded to include the 'Khinalig and Köç Yolu Transhumance Route', recognizing the ancient semi-nomadic tradition of moving between highlands and lowlands. Visitors can explore the village's two small museums, which showcase carpets, copper plates, farming equipment, and archaeological finds.
