Discover more about Shakikhanovs' Palace

Nestled in the historic city of Sheki, Azerbaijan, the Shakikhanovs' Palace offers a captivating glimpse into the region's rich cultural and architectural heritage. Constructed in the late 18th century, this palace served as the winter residence for the Shakikhanovs, a prominent ruling family. Unlike the more famous Palace of Shaki Khans, which was used as a summer retreat, the Shakikhanovs' Palace provides a more intimate perspective on the lives of the local aristocracy. The palace's architecture is a fascinating blend of traditional Azerbaijani design and influences from neighboring cultures. Built under the order of Mohammad Hussein Khan, the two-story rectangular structure reflects the opulence of the era. Clay was used extensively in its construction, providing natural insulation to keep the rooms cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Inside, the palace is divided into six rooms and four corridors, each meticulously designed and decorated. The rooms are adorned with vibrant frescoes, intricate woodwork, and stunning shebeke-style stained-glass windows crafted from thousands of tiny pieces of colored glass fitted together without nails or glue. These windows filter sunlight, creating a mesmerizing play of colors and patterns. The walls are covered with rectangular boards, and the ceilings boast decorative vines. The wall paintings depict scenes from the works of the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi, including "Seven Beauties" and "Leyli and Majnun". The winter halls on the first floor feature 'bukharis' (fireplaces), adding to the cozy atmosphere. The second floor was primarily intended for guests. Visiting the Shakikhanovs' Palace offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the artistry of 18th-century Azerbaijan.
