Galarsan-Gorarsan Fortress: A Sentinel of Sheki

Galarsan-Gorarsan Fortress, whose name translates to “will come, will see”, is a medieval fortress located approximately 4 kilometers north of Sheki. The ruins rest atop Garatepe Mountain, offering commanding views of the Kish River valley. Its origins trace back to the 8th or 9th century, a period of significant fortification and defense construction in the region. The fortress is not only a historical landmark but also a testament to the strategic importance of Sheki throughout the ages. The name carries a legendary tale. In the 18th century, when the Persian ruler Nadir Shah sought to conquer the Sheki Khanate, Haji Chalabi Khan, the leader of Sheki, famously retorted with these words when asked to surrender. This defiant response led to Nadir Shah's assault on the fortress in 1744. However, the fortress's formidable position and the resilience of its defenders forced Nadir Shah to retreat, solidifying the fortress's name and reputation. Today, the fortress exists primarily as ruins, yet its historical significance and stunning location continue to draw visitors. Exploring the site involves a moderately challenging hike, typically starting from the village of Kish. Remnants of towers, walls, and other structures offer clues to its former grandeur. While much of the fortress has succumbed to the ravages of time, the remaining ruins evoke a sense of the past, allowing visitors to imagine the lives of those who defended it centuries ago. The sense of history is palpable, and the views are simply stunning.
