Discover more about Bukhara Caravanserai

Located in the heart of Baku's Old City, the Bukhara Caravanserai is a captivating reminder of the Silk Road's legacy. Constructed in the late 15th century, this caravanserai provided a safe and welcoming haven for merchants and travelers, particularly those journeying from Central Asia. Its name reflects a strong connection to the city of Bukhara (in modern-day Uzbekistan), a prominent trading center along the Silk Road. Strategically positioned along a major trade route passing through the Shamakhi Gate of the Baku fortress, the Bukhara Caravanserai facilitated commerce and cultural exchange. Caravanserais like this were essential to the Silk Road, acting as commercial hubs where merchants from distant lands converged to exchange goods, ideas, and traditions, contributing to Baku's rich and diverse heritage. The caravanserai features a square layout with an open courtyard, a design typical of such establishments. Surrounding the courtyard are individual cells or rooms that once provided private accommodations for merchants and their goods. Balconies adorned with pointed arches run along the perimeter of the courtyard, showcasing the Shirvan-Absheron architectural style. In 1964, the Bukhara Caravanserai underwent significant restoration, preserving its historical integrity by removing later additions and revealing its original structure. Today, the Bukhara Caravanserai stands as a testament to Baku's pivotal role in the Silk Road trade. It now houses a restaurant serving traditional Azerbaijani cuisine, allowing visitors to savor the flavors of the region while immersing themselves in the historical ambiance.
