Buzeyir Cave, situated on the left bank of the Zuvandchay River in Azerbaijan's Lerik region, is a remarkable archaeological site that provides a window into the Paleolithic era. Located at an altitude of 1,640 meters on Delikli-Dash Mountain, the cave's discovery in 1985 by Asadulla Jafarov's expedition marked a turning point in understanding early human presence in the region. Archaeological excavations have revealed six distinct layers within the cave, each representing different periods of habitation. The earliest layers contain stone tools and animal bones dating back 60,000-80,000 years, demonstrating the cave's use as a shelter and hunting ground for Neanderthals. Notably, over 70 artifacts, including clawed cores, simple knuckles, and other stone tools, have been unearthed, offering insights into the daily lives and technological capabilities of these early inhabitants. The cave's dimensions are modest, with a length of 12 meters, a width of 5-6 meters, and a height of 2.5 meters. Despite its size, Buzeyir Cave holds a wealth of information about the Middle Paleolithic and Mousterian cultures that once thrived in this area.
