Discover more about Javanshir Tower

Javanshir Tower, a historical monument also known as Javanshir Fortress, is located approximately 4 km north of Talistan village in the Ismayilli region of Azerbaijan. The tower is perched on the right bank of the Agchay River. The fortress is named after Javanshir, an Albanian ruler from the Mehranid dynasty who reigned from 637 to 680 AD. Javanshir was known for his political acumen and military leadership. The tower's construction is attributed to the period between the 7th and 12th centuries, reflecting the architectural styles and defensive strategies prevalent during that time. The fortress complex consists of outer and inner sections, with the inner fortress (Ichgala) situated at the highest point of the mountain. The outer walls, reaching up to 2 meters in width and 10 meters in height in some sections, provided a formidable defense against potential attacks. Archaeological excavations in the area suggest that the site has a history dating back over 2000 years. Talistan itself is one of the oldest settlements in the Ismayilli region, with traces of ancient settlements and cemeteries found in its vicinity. The tower's strategic location, overlooking the Agchay River valley, allowed for effective control and surveillance of the surrounding area. Today, Javanshir Tower stands as a testament to the region's historical significance and the enduring legacy of Javanshir. While time and natural elements have taken their toll, the remaining walls and towers still evoke a sense of the fortress's former grandeur. Local legends add to the mystique of Javanshir Tower. One tale suggests that a secret underground tunnel once connected the fortress to the Maiden Tower, located several kilometers away. While the tunnel has collapsed over time, remnants of its existence are said to remain.
