Discover more about Tree of Life

In the heart of Bahrain's southern desert, far from any natural water source, stands the Tree of Life, a testament to nature's resilience. This *Prosopis cineraria* tree, also known as Ghaf in Arabic, is estimated to have been planted around 1583 and continues to thrive despite the harsh, arid environment. The tree is approximately 9.75 meters (32 feet) tall. Surrounded by sand dunes, the Tree of Life presents a striking image of green foliage against a barren landscape. Its survival has baffled scientists and drawn legends, with some believing it to be a remnant of the Garden of Eden or protected by ancient gods. While its roots may reach deep into the earth (potentially up to 50 meters) to tap into underground water sources, the exact method of its sustenance remains a mystery. Visitors can explore the Tree of Life and learn about its history and the surrounding desert environment at the visitor center. The site sometimes hosts cultural events on an open-air platform. The tree is particularly beautiful after dusk when it is illuminated. The tree is protected by a wall and barrier. Artifacts dating back 500 years have been discovered near the tree.
