Discover more about Bahrain Fort

Bahrain Fort, or Qal'at al-Bahrain, is an ancient tell and former Portuguese military fortification that stands as a powerful testament to Bahrain's rich history. The site, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005, is located in Karbabad, about 5.5 kilometers from Manama. Excavations since 1954 have revealed an artificial mound, 12 meters high, comprised of seven stratified layers created by various occupants from 2300 BC to the 18th century, including the Kassites, Greeks, Portuguese, and Persians. The fort was the capital of the Dilmun civilization, a crucial trade hub connecting the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia, and beyond. The fort's strategic location made it a vital center for trade and cultural exchange throughout antiquity. The Portuguese, in 1561, transformed it into a key military installation to protect their trade routes. The site's continuous occupation for nearly 4,500 years provides invaluable insights into the Copper and Bronze Ages. Today, Bahrain Fort is remarkably well-preserved, allowing visitors to explore its historical structures. The site features a stylish, modern visitor center and museum opened in 2008, which displays artifacts discovered on-site, showcasing five historical periods arranged chronologically. Visitors can also enjoy a scenic walk along the long walking path that encircles the site, with a free audio guide service providing information about the various sections. The fort is beautifully illuminated at night, making it a popular destination for evening strolls.
