Qala't Bu Mahir, or Bu Mahir Fort, is a captivating historical landmark located on the southern tip of Muharraq Island in Bahrain. As the gateway to the Pearling Path, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fort offers a glimpse into the island's pearling history. Originally constructed around 1840, its origins can be traced back to a 16th-century Portuguese fortification. In its prime, Qala't Bu Mahir was a four-towered fortress with defensive walls, protecting the pearling harbor and Muharraq's water supply. It defended the pearling fleet from pirates, ensuring the safe return of divers. Although British naval forces destroyed parts of the fort in 1868, it remained a focal point for festivals marking the beginning and end of the pearling season. The 3.5-kilometer Pearling Path starts here, winding through Muharraq and connecting historic houses, mosques and buildings related to the pearl trade. From the fort's vantage points, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf.
