Discover more about Al Fateh Grand Mosque

The Al Fateh Grand Mosque, located in Manama, Bahrain, is a testament to Islamic architecture and a symbol of the nation's rich cultural heritage. Built in 1987 by the late Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, it was named in honor of Ahmed Al Fateh, the founder of modern Bahrain. Encompassing 6,500 square meters, the mosque can accommodate over 7,000 worshippers, making it one of the largest mosques in the world. Its design, by Egyptian architect Ahmed Juma, reflects a blend of modern and traditional Islamic art, incorporating materials and craftsmanship from around the globe. The mosque's most prominent feature is its massive fiberglass dome, weighing over 60 tons, which was once the largest of its kind. The dome allows natural light to flood the main prayer hall, creating a serene atmosphere. Two towering minarets flank the dome, enhancing the mosque's majestic presence. The interior is adorned with exquisite materials and intricate designs. Italian marble covers the floors, while the doors are crafted from Indian teakwood. An Austrian chandelier hangs from the dome's center, complemented by hand-blown French lamps. The walls feature Kufic calligraphy, an ancient Arabic script, adding to the mosque's artistic and spiritual significance. Since 2006, the mosque has also housed the National Library of Bahrain, containing approximately 7,000 books, some over 100 years old. These include books on Hadith, the Global Arabic Encyclopedia, and Islamic Jurisprudence. The mosque is open to visitors from 9 am to 4 pm, except on Fridays and public holidays. Guided tours are available in multiple languages, offering insights into Islamic culture and the mosque's architecture. Visitors are advised to dress modestly, and women are provided with cloaks and headscarves.
