Shaikh Ebrahim Center: A Window into Bahraini Heritage
Explore Bahrain's cultural heart at the Shaikh Ebrahim Center in Muharraq, a hub of heritage, arts, and intellectual dialogue.
The Shaikh Ebrahim Center for Culture and Research, located in the heart of Muharraq, stands as a testament to Bahrain's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. Established in 2002, this non-governmental organization revitalizes traditional Bahraini houses, transforming them into vibrant cultural spaces that celebrate the island's history, art, and literature. The center is named in honor of Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa (1870-1933), a prominent figure in Bahraini history. As the sixteenth son of Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, he dedicated himself to knowledge and the arts. His majlis (reception room) in Muharraq was a gathering place for intellectuals, poets, and artists. The Shaikh Ebrahim Center carries on this legacy, serving as a modern-day majlis where ideas are shared and debated. The center has restored around ten historic houses in Muharraq and Manama. These restored houses host exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events. One of the most notable is the Mohammed bin Faris House for Sut Music, dedicated to preserving Bahrain's unique musical heritage. The Abdullah Al Zayed House for Bahraini Press Heritage pays tribute to the history of journalism in Bahrain. The Memory of the Place – Bin Matar House showcases traditional Bahraini architecture and the history of a leading pearl trading family. The center's main building, a modern reconstruction of Shaikh Ebrahim's original majlis, includes a conference and debate center and a library. An interactive exhibit takes visitors through Shaikh Ebrahim's life, with archival photographs and videos.
