Discover more about Al Khamis Mosque

Al Khamis Mosque, located in Tashan, Bahrain, is a significant historical landmark and is considered one of the oldest mosques in the Arab world. Its foundation is believed to have been laid as early as 692 CE, with some sources suggesting it was built during the era of the Umayyad caliph Umar II. Other accounts propose a later construction during the rule of the Uyunids, initially with a single minaret, followed by a second minaret two centuries later under the Usfurids. The mosque has undergone several rebuilds and restorations, particularly in the 14th and 15th centuries, which included the construction of its iconic twin minarets. The structure showcases a blend of architectural styles from different periods. The original prayer hall, dating back to the 14th century, features a flat roof supported by wooden columns. A later addition includes arches based on thick masonry piers, dating back to 1339. Al Khamis Mosque derives its name from a local market (Souq al-Khamis) that was held in the area on Thursdays (al-Khamis). Basic local materials, such as clay and teak, were used in its construction. Teak was often shipped from India to the Persian Gulf and utilized in early Islamic mosques. Today, Al Khamis Mosque stands as a partially restored monument, recognized for its enduring legacy of Islam in Bahrain. Restoration efforts have been undertaken to preserve the remaining elements, including the minarets and sections of the prayer hall. Visitors can explore the mosque's beautiful interior and learn about its history through informative plaques and local guides. The site also features a visitor center displaying archaeological artifacts discovered on the site. The serene ambiance of the mosque offers a peaceful escape and a chance to appreciate the spiritual essence of this historical place.
