    Discover more about Durga Sagar

Durga Sagar, also known as Madhabpasha Dighi, is the largest lake in southern Bangladesh, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling city life of Barisal. The lake was excavated in 1780 by Rani Durgabati, mother of Raja Joy Narayan, to alleviate the local water crisis. Named in honor of Rani Durga Devi, the lake has since become an integral part of the region's identity. The lake spans approximately 25 hectares (62 acres) and features a small, forested island at its center, serving as a sanctuary for various bird species, especially during winter when migratory birds flock to the area. Species like 'Sarail' and 'Bali Hash' are commonly spotted. The chirping of thousands of birds creates a soothing ambiance. The lake is surrounded by well-maintained embankments and paved ghats (steps), providing ample space for leisurely walks and relaxation. Historically, Durga Sagar had four ghats, but renovations in 1975 restored only two on the north and west sides. The entire area is enclosed by walls, with a footpath around the perimeter. The surrounding areas of the Dighi are now used as a picnic spot. Durga Sagar holds religious significance for the Hindu community, and the lake is well-maintained, ensuring a pleasant experience for all. Visitors can also find shops catering to tourists and local markets nearby.
