4.3

Ulania Jamidar Bari is a historical landmark in Mehendiganj Upazila, Barisal, standing as a testament to the region's rich past. This centuries-old zamindar (landlord) palace was established around the 1700s by Subedar Hanif Khan, a commander of Mughal forces sent to quell pirate activity in the area. After successfully curbing the pirates, Hanif Khan settled in Ulania, and his descendants became wealthy zamindars, constructing the Ulania Zamindar Bari. The complex includes multiple buildings, a mosque, and a pond, reflecting the opulence of the zamindari lifestyle. The Ulania Zamindar Bari Jame Masjid, built in 1861, features a unique blend of Mughal and local architectural styles. The three-domed mosque, reminiscent of the Taj Mahal, has been renovated several times, yet retains its original appearance. The mosque also features a large nakara (drum-like object) that was used to signal important times to the villagers. While time and river erosion have taken their toll, much of the original structure remains, attracting tourists interested in exploring Bangladesh's architectural and cultural heritage. The site offers a glimpse into the socio-economic and cultural developments of the area during its prime.
