Mathurapur Deul, situated in the village of Mathurapur in Madhukhali Upazila, Faridpur, Bangladesh, offers a glimpse into the region's cultural and architectural heritage. This ancient monastery, believed to have been built around the 16th or 17th century, stands as a testament to the artistic and religious practices of the time.The origins of Mathurapur Deul are debated, with some historians attributing its construction to Sangram Singh, a Bengal general, around 1636. Another account suggests Mansingh, a general of Emperor Akbar, built it to commemorate a victory. The Deul's architectural style reflects a blend of Hindu and local influences. The 80-foot high structure is made of lime and brick, adorned with terracotta carvings. These carvings depict scenes from the Ramayana and Krishnaleela, along with Hindu mythological figures, singers, dancers, and war scenes. A crescent face is placed in the middle of each corner, adding to its unique design.In 2014, Mathurapur Deul was listed as a National Archaeological Site by the Directorate of Archeology of Bangladesh. The surrounding lush greenery and the nearby Chandana River offer a tranquil escape.
