Discover more about Shri Shri Kaal Vairab Temple

The Shri Shri Kaal Vairab Temple, situated in Medda, Brahmanbaria, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Kal Bhairab form. The temple's fame rests on its impressive Shiva Linga, a towering 28-feet tall statue believed to be among the largest in the world. This draws devotees and tourists to the site. While Lord Shiva is the primary deity, the temple also reveres Goddess Kali, whose statue is positioned to the right of Kal Bhairab, and Goddess Parvati, located to the left. This makes it a major pilgrimage destination for Shaivites in Bangladesh. The temple's history dates back to the 19th century. Legend says that around 200 years ago, a sculptor named Durgacharan Acharjee had a dream that inspired him to create the statue from soil. Noor Muhammad, a local landlord from Sarail, donated the land for the temple's construction. Before Brahmanbaria was established, Medda was a bustling market by the Titas River. Durgacharan initially built the statue on the riverbank, where regular prayers took place until 1971. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, the temple suffered damage at the hands of Pakistani soldiers. The statue was partially destroyed with dynamite, and later rebuilt over four years, this time using stone. While the original statue was made of soil, the current one is made of stone and stands at 24 feet. The temple holds regular and annual prayers, drawing visitors from various regions. Management committees oversee the temple's operations, and the government supports its maintenance.
