Sompur Mahavihara, also known as Paharpur Buddhist Vihara, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Paharpur, in the Naogaon District of Bangladesh. This ancient Buddhist monastery, dating back to the 8th century, stands as one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Indian subcontinent. Built during the Pala Dynasty, it served as a major center for Buddhist learning, cultural exchange, and religious practice, attracting scholars and monks from across Asia.The complex spans approximately 27 acres and is characterized by its quadrangular structure, featuring 177 monastic cells arranged around a central courtyard. The focal point is a towering cruciform structure with terraced levels, believed to be a stupa, adorned with intricate terracotta plaques depicting Buddhist themes, daily life, and nature. The site also houses the remains of a library, highlighting its historical importance as an intellectual center.Excavations have revealed a wealth of artifacts, including bronze statues, terracotta plaques, stone sculptures, inscriptions, coins and ceramics, offering insights into the Pala Empire and the monastery's role in regional governance and religion. A museum at the site displays many of these finds. Sompur Mahavihara thrived until the 12th century when it began to decline due to political upheavals and shifts in religious patronage. Today, it attracts tourists, historians, and Buddhist pilgrims, providing a glimpse into the region's glorious past.
