Lalbagh Fort, situated on the Buriganga River's bank in Old Dhaka, stands as a striking example of Mughal architecture, despite never reaching completion. The fort's construction commenced in 1678 by Prince Muhammad Azam, the son of Emperor Aurangzeb, who served as the Mughal governor of Bengal at the time. However, his stay was cut short when Aurangzeb summoned him back to Delhi, leaving the fort incomplete. Shaista Khan, the new governor, continued the work, but halted construction in 1684 after the untimely death of his daughter, Pari Bibi, believing the fort to be unlucky.The fort complex comprises several notable structures, including the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience), the Quilla Mosque, and the Tomb of Pari Bibi. The tomb, the most significant of the Mughal buildings within the fort, features white marble and intricate stonework. The three-domed mosque showcases a blend of Mughal and Bengali architectural styles. Recent excavations have revealed additional structures, including a roof garden, water reservoir, utility buildings, and a network of tunnels.Today, Lalbagh Fort is maintained by the Archaeological Department of Bangladesh and serves as a popular tourist attraction.
