These individuals were demanding official status for their native tongue, Bangla, when Pakistani police opened fire on protesters. The original monument, a simple structure erected by students, was quickly demolished by authorities. However, the spirit of the movement lived on, and after Bangladesh's independence in 1971, the Shaheed Minar was rebuilt and expanded.
