Maynamati War Cemetry, Chittagong Division Travel Guide

Located approximately 7 kilometers from the center of Cumilla, the Maynamati War Cemetery is a beautifully maintained tribute to the soldiers who died during the Second World War. Before the war, Maynamati was a small hamlet, but it became a significant military camp with several British and Indian military hospitals and ordnance depots. The majority of those buried in the cemetery succumbed to their injuries or illnesses in these hospitals.The cemetery, established and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), contains 736 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War. Graves from isolated places in the surrounding country, and some from as far afield as Burma (now Myanmar), were relocated to Maynamati for better maintenance and preservation. The cemetery is dominated by a small, flat-topped hill crowned with indigenous flowering and evergreen trees. The Christian graves lie between the entrance and this hill, and the Muslim graves are on the far side. On a terrace about halfway up the hill, facing the entrance, stands the Cross of Sacrifice.The Maynamati War Cemetery stands as a significant historical and cultural site in Bangladesh, attracting both local and international visitors. It serves as a testament to the sacrifices made during World War II and a reminder of the importance of preserving peace and understanding in the world. Each gravestone tells a unique story, marked with names, dates of birth, and religious symbols, allowing visitors to connect with the lives cut short in the pursuit of freedom.
