Discover more about Laldighi Park

Laldighi Park, located in the Kotwali area of Chattogram, is a historically and culturally significant landmark offering a tranquil escape from the bustling city. The park's centerpiece, Laldighi (Red Pond), dates back to the 18th century during the British colonial period. When the East India Company gained control of Chattogram in 1761, they established administrative buildings, including the Tahsil office (now the Metropolitan Police Office), painting them red. These structures became known as 'Lalkuthi' (Red House) and 'Lalghar' (Red Abode). The pond adjacent to these buildings gradually expanded and became known as Laldighi. In the 19th century, the area around Laldighi was known as the Municipal Maidan, a large public space for political gatherings, rallies, and social events. Pivotal moments in Bangladesh's history unfolded here, including rallies during the independence movement and the Six-Point Movement led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1966. Today, Laldighi Park provides a welcome respite from the urban environment. Rows of willow and debdaru trees line the park's perimeter, adding to its tranquil ambiance. Visitors can stroll along the pathways, relax on benches, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Laldighi is also a hub for cultural events and traditions. One of the most prominent events is the annual Boli Khela, a traditional wrestling competition dating back to 1909. Abdul Jabbar Sowdagar, a local businessman, initiated this event to promote physical strength and community spirit. The park is typically open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM and again from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Visiting Laldighi Park offers a unique opportunity to connect with the history, culture, and natural beauty of Chattogram.
