4.4

Itakhola Mura, situated in Kotbari, Comilla, unveils the remnants of a significant Buddhist monastery believed to have been constructed around the 7th or 8th century. The name Itakhola Mura translates to 'Brick Mound', derived from the historical use of the site as a source of bricks. Archaeological excavations have revealed a grand complex featuring a stupa and a monastery. The stupa, originally built in a traditional style, stands on a 13.1-meter square base and features a unique small sanctum on its eastern side. A damaged life-size stucco image of Akshobhya, a Dhyani Buddha, was discovered here. The monastery, located to the north of the stupa, is square-shaped with 19 cells surrounding an open courtyard. Over time, the temple underwent multiple phases of construction, with additions, removals, and reconstructions shaping its form. Artifacts recovered from the site include gold, silver coins, copper plates, clay plaques, and Buddhist statues, offering a glimpse into the religious and artistic practices of the time. Today, Itakhola Mura stands as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage, attracting history enthusiasts and tourists alike.
