Jagannath Temple: A Beacon of Faith in Cumilla

The Jagannath Temple, also known as Sateroratna Mandir or seventeen-jewel temple, is located approximately 2 km southeast of Cumilla town. This significant Hindu temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath and his siblings, Balabhadra and Subhadra. The temple's history is linked to the Tripura kingdom, with construction attributed to either King Ratna Manikya Bahadur or Maharaja Rada Kishor Manikuo Bahadur in the 16th century. The deities were originally housed in a temple in Tripura before being moved to Cumilla. The temple's architecture is a unique blend of Bengal style, featuring terracotta brickwork. The original structure was adorned with seventeen towers or jewels, which have been damaged over time. The temple is built on an octagonal base, rising approximately 60 feet with a conical, four-storied structure, making it one of the tallest temples in the region. The exterior walls maintain the octagonal shape, creating an inverted cone-like appearance. The temple's surface was once decorated with intricate terracotta designs, showcasing Bengal's artistic traditions. Local legends add to the temple's mystique, including tales of hidden jewels and underground floors. A tank located to the west of the temple is believed to be as old as the temple itself. Today, the temple is under the care of ISKCON devotees. Visitors can explore Cumilla's other historical sites, such as the Mainamati ruins and World War II cemetery, to gain a broader understanding of the region's past.
