St. Martin's Island, a serene jewel in the Bay of Bengal, is Bangladesh's only coral island. Situated approximately 9 km south of the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf peninsula, it offers a unique escape from the mainland. Historically, the island was once connected to the Teknaf peninsula, later becoming an island due to natural geological changes. Arabian merchants first settled here in the 18th century, naming it 'Jazira'. During British rule, it was renamed St. Martin's Island. Today, St. Martin's is a haven of natural beauty. Its crystal-clear waters and sandy beaches are perfect for relaxation and recreation. The island is small enough to explore on foot or by bicycle, adding to its laid-back charm. Key attractions include the stunning beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and the opportunity to witness both sunrise and sunset over the Bay of Bengal. Visitors can also explore local markets, sample fresh seafood, and interact with the warm, hospitable locals. Despite its growing popularity, St. Martin's retains a rustic charm. There is no electricity, and motorized vehicles are limited, preserving the island's tranquility. Evenings are often lit by generators and bonfires, creating a peaceful atmosphere. The island's surrounding marine environment is rich in biodiversity and was declared a Marine Protected Area in 2022. This helps protect its diverse ecosystems, including coral reefs and various species of fish, reptiles, and birds.
