Discover more about Sompur Mahavihara

Sompur Mahavihara, also known as Paharpur Buddhist Vihara, is a remarkable archaeological site in Paharpur, Bangladesh, offering a glimpse into the region's rich Buddhist heritage. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, this ancient monastery was built during the Pala Dynasty, around the late 8th or early 9th century CE, by Dharmapala, the second ruler of the Pala Empire. Spanning 27 acres (11 hectares), Sompur Mahavihara was a major center for Buddhist education, religious practice, and cultural exchange. Scholars and monks from Tibet, China, and other parts of Asia flocked here to study Buddhist philosophy, logic, and medicine. The complex features a quadrangular structure with 177 monastic cells lining the outer walls, surrounding a central courtyard. At the heart of the monastery stands a towering cruciform structure with terraced levels, believed to be a stupa or shrine, adorned with intricate terracotta plaques depicting Buddhist themes, daily life, and nature.Excavations at the site have revealed a wealth of artifacts, including bronze statues, terracotta plaques, stone sculptures, inscriptions, coins and ceramics, providing valuable insights into the Pala Empire and the monastery's role in regional governance and religion. The site also housed a library, which was one of the largest in the region, containing an extensive collection of manuscripts and scriptures. Sompur Mahavihara thrived as an academic and religious hub until the 12th century, influencing Buddhist architecture around the world. Despite its decline and eventual abandonment, the rediscovery and excavation of Sompur Mahavihara in the late 19th and early 20th centuries have allowed us to appreciate its historical and architectural significance. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, visit the on-site museum, and learn about the fascinating history of this ancient monastic complex.
