Overview

The Meghna Bridge, gracefully stretching across the Meghna River, is a vital part of Bangladesh's transportation network. Officially named the Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Bridge 1, it symbolizes international cooperation and the country's infrastructure progress. Constructed with assistance from Japan, the bridge has significantly improved connectivity between Dhaka and Chittagong, two of Bangladesh's most important economic centers. Before the bridge, travelers relied on ferries, which were time-consuming and unreliable. The bridge streamlined transportation, reducing travel times and facilitating the efficient movement of goods and people. It is a cantilever and girder bridge, stretching 930 meters in length with a dual carriageway. Its thirteen spans are supported by RCC caissons and piles, ensuring stability and durability. The hexagonal piers, each 11 meters long, rise from the riverbed, providing a solid foundation for the structure.Beyond its functional importance, the Meghna Bridge offers visitors a chance to appreciate the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. The expansive Meghna River provides a stunning backdrop. From the bridge, travelers can witness the daily lives of the riverine communities, observing fishermen, boats ferrying passengers and cargo, and the lush greenery that lines the riverbanks. The bridge's impact extends beyond transportation, spurring economic growth and development in the surrounding areas. While crossing the Meghna Bridge, one can reflect on its historical context. The bridge eliminated the need for ferries, providing a reliable and efficient transportation alternative.
