Bharat Vaina, also known as Bharat Rajar Deul, is a significant archaeological site located in the village of Bharat Vaina in Keshabpur Upazila, Jessore District, Bangladesh. The site rests on the west bank of the Buribhadra River. This mound holds the remains of what is believed to be a Buddhist temple dating back approximately 1500 years, potentially to the Gupta period. In 1922, archaeologist Kashinath Dixit surveyed the mound and suggested it might contain a five-century-old Buddhist temple, possibly one of the 30 Sangharamas of Samatat described by Hiuen-tsang. Excavations, particularly those conducted by the Department of Archeology of the Government of Bangladesh between 1984 and 2001, have revealed a structure with 94 rooms, including a Buddhist stupa comprised of 82 rooms and four rooms at the top. These excavations also indicated damage from an earthquake in 1897.Local lore suggests that around 1800 years ago, King Bharata Bhadra ruled over a large part of the Sundarbans, including the banks of the Bhadra River, and built Bharat Vaina to preserve his memory. Today, Bharat Vaina stands as a testament to the region's ancient past, drawing history enthusiasts and those curious about the early civilizations of Bengal.
