The Bhabadaha 21-Vent Sluice Gate stands as a testament to both human ingenuity and the complex challenges of water management in Bangladesh. Located in the Bhabadaha area, near অভয়নগর in the যশোর district, this structure was once a cornerstone of agricultural prosperity for a wide swath of southwestern Bangladesh. Conceived and constructed during the 1958-1963 period, the sluice gate was part of a larger effort to implement a 'Green Revolution' in the region. Its primary purpose was to regulate water flow across approximately 128,000 hectares, preventing the intrusion of saline water and facilitating drainage for 27 বিলs (natural depressions or water bodies). This ambitious project aimed to boost agricultural productivity in the districts of মনিরামপুর, কেশবপুর, অভয়নগর, and যশোর সদর, as well as parts of খুলনা including ডুমুরিয়া, ফুলতলা, and বটিয়াঘাটা. The design featured 21 vents, or openings, allowing for controlled release of water from the বিলs into the টেকা and মুক্তেশ্বরী rivers, ultimately flowing towards the sea. For nearly two decades, the sluice gate functioned effectively, contributing to increased crop yields and improved livelihoods for local farmers. The area flourished, and the Bhabadaha Sluice Gate became a symbol of progress and prosperity. However, the success was not to last indefinitely. Starting in the 1980s, a combination of factors led to a gradual decline in the sluice gate's effectiveness. The primary issue was siltation. Over time, the natural flow of the পদ্মা River, the main source of water for the region's rivers, was disrupted, leading to reduced water flow.
