Discover more about Dinajpur Rajbari

Dinajpur Rajbari, situated on the north-eastern edge of Dinajpur town, stands as a poignant reminder of the region's royal heritage. The origins of the Rajbari are debated, with some attributing its establishment to Raja Dinaj or Dinaraj, while others believe Raja Ganesha of the early 15th century was the founder. The palace saw further development under King Srimanta Dutta and later zamindars and Rajas. From 1806 to 1951, the palace symbolized the greater Dinajpur district. The complex is divided into three main blocks or 'Mahals': the Aina Mahal (Mirror Palace), the Rani Mahal, and the Thakurbadi Mahal, along with other minor buildings. The Aina Mahal once housed a courthouse adorned with glass and marble, a library, and a treasure house. The Rani Mahal included a shelter for families run by the Department of Social Services after parts of the old structure were demolished in the 1930s. Today, much of the 16.41-acre site lies in ruins. Visitors can still witness the remnants of the grand architecture, including a tall arched gate facing west, a painted Krishna temple near the gateway, and an inner gateway leading to a courtyard. Facing the courtyard is a flat-roofed temple with statues of Hindu gods. Although in disrepair, the remains of the Aina Mahal display a blend of European, Muslim, and Hindu styles, featuring Ionic columns and relief work depicting elephants holding a crown. The palace also included moats, gardens, a zoo, and a tennis court. Dinajpur Rajbari is open from 8 AM to 7 PM.
