Tajhat Palace: A Zamindari Gem

Tajhat Palace, also known as Tajhat Rajbari, is a historical palace located in Rangpur, Bangladesh. Built in the early 20th century by Maharaja Kumar Gopal Lal Roy, a Hindu jeweler-turned-zamindar, the palace is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of Bengal's zamindari culture. The name 'Tajhat' is believed to have originated from Roy's profession, with 'Taj' meaning crown and 'Hat' meaning market.The palace's architecture is a captivating blend of Mughal and European styles, incorporating elements of Hindu and Islamic design. Constructed with white stones, marble, limestone, and red bricks imported from across the subcontinent, the palace features a U-shaped layout with an imposing central staircase made of imported white marble. The balustrade was originally adorned with marble sculptures of classical Roman figures, though these have since disappeared. A ribbed conical dome crowns the palace roof, adding to its majestic appearance.From 1984 to 1991, the palace served as a branch of the Rangpur High Court. In 1995, it was declared a protected monument by the Department of Archaeology. Recognizing its architectural and historical significance, the government transformed the palace into the Rangpur Museum in 2005. The museum houses a collection of artifacts, including 10th and 11th-century terracotta relics, Sanskrit and Arabic manuscripts, and black stone Hindu carvings.Surrounded by lush gardens and serene landscapes, Tajhat Palace offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of the zamindars and the rich cultural heritage of the region. The palace is open to visitors from 10 am to 6 pm, seven days a week, though the museum may have varying hours depending on the season and public holidays. Photography is not permitted inside the museum.
