Rangpur Zoo: A Green Oasis of Wildlife

Rangpur Zoo, officially opened on June 14, 1991, stands as a testament to former President Ershad's vision for enriching his hometown. Spanning 21.51 acres, this zoological garden is the largest in North Bengal and the second largest in Bangladesh. Located conveniently on Police Line Road, near the Rangpur District Administration Office, the zoo provides a green escape within the city. The zoo is home to a diverse collection of 26 species and over 215 individual animals. Visitors can marvel at majestic lions and Bengal tigers, observe a hippopotamus in its enclosure, and spot crocodiles basking in the sun. The aviary showcases various bird species, while monkeys and deer add to the zoo's appeal. Beyond the animals, the zoo features a children's park, an artificial lake, and rows of trees, creating a park-like atmosphere. Rangpur Zoo serves multiple roles, functioning as a recreational space, an educational center, and a conservation initiative. It offers opportunities for visitors, especially children, to learn about different animal species and the importance of wildlife conservation. The zoo also participates in breeding programs for endangered species, contributing to biodiversity protection. While some visitors have noted that the animal enclosures are of an older style, efforts are underway to modernize the zoo's facilities to meet international standards.
