Discover more about Tajhat Palace

Tajhat Palace, also known as Tajhat Rajbari, stands as a majestic reminder of Bengal's zamindari (landlord) era. Located on the outskirts of Rangpur, about 6 kilometers southeast of the city center, this historical palace was built in the early 20th century by Maharaja Kumar Gopal Lal Roy. The palace is believed to have derived its name from Roy's profession as a jeweler; 'Taj' means crown and 'hat' means market. Construction began in the early 1900s and was completed around 1925, employing 2,000 workers and costing $1.5 million at the time. The palace is a blend of Mughal and European architectural styles, incorporating elements from Hindu and Islamic traditions. The palace is 'U' shaped, with a west-facing facade, and features a ribbed conical dome similar to Dhaka's Ahsan Manzil. The palace is known for its intricate designs, white and marble stone construction, and lush gardens. From 1984 to 1991, the palace served as a branch of the Rangpur High Court. In 1995, it was declared a protected monument, and in 2005, the Rangpur Museum was moved to the second floor of the palace. The museum displays a collection of artifacts, including terracotta items from the 10th and 11th centuries, Sanskrit and Arabic manuscripts, and black stone Hindu carvings. Photography is not permitted inside the museum. Visitors can explore the palace grounds, admire the architecture, and learn about the history of the region. The palace is open to visitors seven days a week, though the museum's hours vary.
