Discover more about Ratargul

Ratargul Swamp Forest, often called the 'Amazon of Bangladesh' or the 'Sundarbans of Sylhet,' is a remarkable freshwater swamp forest located in the Gowainghat Upazila of Sylhet. This natural wonder, situated about 26 kilometers from Sylhet city, spans over 3,325 acres, with 504 acres designated as a wildlife sanctuary. What sets Ratargul apart is that it's the only swamp forest in Bangladesh and one of the few freshwater swamp forests in the world. The forest's name originates from the 'Rata' or 'Pati' tree, a species commonly found in the area. Fed by the Gowain River at the foothills of the Jaintia Hills in India, Ratargul remains underwater for five to six months each year, typically from May to October. During this time, the water level can reach depths of 10 to 20 feet, creating a surreal landscape where only the treetops are visible. Exploring Ratargul by boat is an essential experience, allowing visitors to glide through the calm waters and witness the unique ecosystem. The forest is home to over 200 species of plants and a variety of animals, including snakes, turtles, lizards, monkeys, deer, and diverse bird species. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the sight of various species, including the Red Junglefowl and Lesser Whistling Duck. Visiting the Ratargul Watch Tower offers panoramic views of the forest. For a more adventurous exploration, kayaking is a popular option, allowing visitors to navigate the waterways at their own pace. Local guides are available to hire, providing valuable insights into the forest's flora, fauna, and hidden spots. While the monsoon season (July to October) offers the quintessential submerged forest experience, Ratargul retains its charm throughout the year. In the winter months, when the water recedes, the forest reveals a different kind of beauty, with opportunities for walking and observing the diverse plant life.
