Cannonball Tree: A Botanical Wonder

The Cannonball tree (Couroupita guianensis), also known as নাগলিঙ্গম বা হাতির জোলাপ বৃক্ষ in Bengali, is a remarkable tropical tree celebrated for its unusual botanical features and cultural associations. Native to South America, it has found its way to various tropical regions, including Bangladesh, where it is admired for its ornamental value. The tree's most striking characteristic is its cauliflory, where the flowers and fruits emerge directly from the trunk and older branches. The fragrant flowers, often pink or red, are large and visually stunning, attracting bees and other pollinators. The fruits are large, spherical, and woody, resembling cannonballs, which gives the tree its common name. These fruits can take up to a year to mature and contain numerous seeds. In some cultures, the Cannonball tree holds religious significance. In India and Sri Lanka, Hindus revere the tree, associating its flowers with the sacred Naga snake and the Shiva Lingam. As such, it is often planted near Shiva temples. Buddhists also plant the tree at religious sites, sometimes confusing it with the Sala tree under which Buddha Vessabhu attained enlightenment. While the fruit is technically edible, it is not widely consumed due to its unpleasant smell. However, various parts of the tree have been used in traditional medicine to treat ailments such as hypertension, tumors, and skin conditions.
