Magurchara Punji, a Khasi village (Punji means village in the Khasi language), is located in the northeastern part of Bangladesh, specifically in the Kamalganj Upazila of Moulvibazar district. This village is home to the Khasi people, an indigenous community with a distinct culture and traditions. The village is situated near the Lawachara National Park, adding to its natural beauty and appeal.The name Magurchara is derived from two words: 'Magur,' a type of fish, and 'Chara,' meaning stream or flow. Thus, Magurchara translates to 'stream of Magur fish'. Historically, the village gained notoriety due to the Magurchara gas field explosion in 1997, which caused significant damage to the surrounding environment, including the Lawachara National Park.Today, Magurchara Punji offers visitors a chance to experience the Khasi way of life. The Khasi people traditionally build their houses on hilltops. The primary occupation of the villagers is cultivating betel leaves. Visitors need permission from the village headmen, who act as the community leaders, to enter the Punji. The village provides a tranquil escape and an opportunity to connect with nature. The lush tea gardens and the overall warmth of local hospitality ensure a memorable experience.
