Jaflong: Daughter of Nature

Jaflong, often called the 'Daughter of Nature,' is a captivating destination in the Sylhet division, approximately 60 km northeast of Sylhet city. Situated in Gowainghat Upazila, it lies on the foothills of the Khasia-Jaintia hills, bordering the Indian state of Meghalaya. This hilly area is a blend of subtropical mountains and rainforests.For many years, Jaflong was a deserted forest under the Khasia Jainta kings. In the 20th century, the Khasia Jainta kingdom ended, and traders began coming to Jaflong in search of stones. The stone trade expanded, and Jaflong became known as a popular tourist place in Sylhet.Key attractions include Zero Point, marking the Indo-Bangladesh border, offering panoramic views of the Meghalaya hills. The Piyain River flows between Bangladesh and India, known for its crystal-clear water, allowing visitors to see the underwater stones. Visitors can also explore tea gardens, Khasi villages, and the Dawki Bridge, a historic landmark built by the British.Jaflong is also known for stone collection, a significant economic activity for the local people. Hundreds of people collect stones from the river Piain every day. These stones are then crushed and supplied all over Bangladesh as construction materials.To make the most of a visit, consider visiting during the monsoon season (July-September) to witness the waterfalls or during the winter (October to May) for stone collecting. Be mindful of the proximity to the Indian border and respect the local culture of the Khasi people.
