Andromeda Botanic Gardens: A Horticultural Haven

Nestled in the picturesque village of Bathsheba, in the parish of Saint Joseph, Barbados, Andromeda Botanic Gardens offers a serene escape into a world of lush tropical flora. Established in 1954 by the esteemed Barbadian horticulturist Iris Bannochie, the garden spans eight acres and showcases over 500 plant species, thriving in the island's tropical climate. Andromeda began as Bannochie's private plant collection around her home, evolving into a unique blend of pleasure garden and botanic garden. The gardens' name is inspired by the Greek mythological figure Andromeda. Bequeathed to the Barbados National Trust in 1988, Andromeda continues to enchant visitors with its beauty and biodiversity. Visitors can explore themed sections, meander along winding paths, and discover hidden art installations. The garden features a diverse array of plants, from vibrant orchids to towering palms, as well as tranquil ponds with koi fish. The garden's elevated location also offers glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean. It's also a haven for local fauna, including hummingbirds, blackbirds and green monkeys. Andromeda Botanic Gardens is committed to sustainability, employing organic pest control and green fertilizers. The gardens also play a role in conservation, striving to preserve rare and endangered plant species.
