Garrison Savannah: A Historic Racetrack

The Garrison Savannah, located in Bridgetown, Barbados, has been the heart of horse racing on the island since 1845. Originally a parade ground for British Regiment officers, it evolved into a vibrant venue where military personnel, plantation owners, and wealthy socialites competed in horse racing events. Today, the Garrison Savannah is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and continues to host thrilling races organized by the Barbados Turf Club. The Barbados Turf Club hosts three racing seasons annually, spanning from January to April, May to August, and October to December. Race days typically occur every other Saturday, featuring nine races that start in the early afternoon. The atmosphere is electric, drawing both locals and tourists eager to witness the excitement. The Savannah is not only a racetrack but also a recreational area where locals and tourists alike can be found exercising, playing sports, or relaxing. Beyond horse racing, the Garrison Savannah is rich in history and surrounded by significant landmarks. The Garrison Historic Area includes the Main Guard House and Clock Tower, the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, St. Ann's Fort, and George Washington House, where the first U.S. President once stayed. Visitors can explore these colonial-era buildings and delve into Barbados' past. The annual National Independence Day Parade is held here every November 30th.
