Discover more about National Heroes Square

National Heroes Square, situated in the heart of Bridgetown, Barbados, stands as a powerful symbol of the nation's identity and a tribute to its most revered figures. The square's origins trace back to the early 1800s when it was known as Trafalgar Square. In 1813, a statue of Lord Horatio Nelson was erected to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar. For many years, the square served as a focal point of colonial identity. However, in 1999, it was officially renamed National Heroes Square to honor the national heroes of Barbados, marking a shift towards celebrating Barbadian achievements and heritage. In 2020 the statue of Lord Nelson was moved to the Barbados Museum and Historical Society. Today, National Heroes Square is more than just a historical site; it's a living testament to the Barbadian spirit. The square is meticulously maintained, featuring well-manicured lawns, vibrant floral displays, and several significant monuments that narrate the island's journey through time. The centerpiece of the square is the Monument to the Barbadian Family, unveiled in November 2023. This monument symbolizes the strength, resilience, and enduring spirit of Barbadian families, acknowledging their pivotal role in shaping the nation's identity. The monument's design incorporates broken shackles, representing the struggle against oppression, and ancestral family sculptures, celebrating the triumph over adversity. In addition to the Monument to the Barbadian Family, visitors can also find the Dolphin Fountain, commemorating the introduction of piped water to Bridgetown in 1861, and a War Memorial, honoring Barbadians who fought in both World War I and World War II. These monuments add layers of historical context to the square, offering insights into different facets of Barbadian history and culture. Opposite National Heroes Square are the historic Parliament Buildings, which house the National Heroes Gallery and the Museum of Parliament.
