Discover more about Flower Forest Botanical Gardens

Discover a tranquil escape in the heart of Barbados at the Flower Forest Botanical Gardens, a lush paradise of vibrant flora, panoramic views, and serene walking trails on a historic plantation. Situated approximately 850 feet above sea level in the parish of St. Joseph, the gardens span 53 acres, showcasing a diverse collection of tropical plants, flowers, and trees from the Caribbean and beyond. Originally Richmond Plantation, the land was once a sugar plantation in the 1800s. While beautiful, it wasn't a leading sugar producer. In 1983, under the leadership of Don Hill and with the expertise of Richard Coghlan of Kew Gardens, the property was transformed into the Flower Forest. The gardens officially opened to the public in December 1983. The gardens feature collections of heliconias, ginger lilies, bromeliads, anthurium lilies, and other tropical flowers, providing a colorful display beneath tall, indigenous Caribbean Royal palms. Visitors can explore the gardens via winding walkways, discovering hidden floral treasures and enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and distant eastern coastline. The imaginative landscaping enhances the natural beauty, creating a peaceful blend of botanical garden and nature trail. In 1990, a new, larger pavilion was constructed, offering expanded space for dining and hosting special events. The pavilion conserved the old boiling house with its giant copper boilers. The gardens underwent a complete rejuvenation in 2009, with further improvements made in 2015 and 2017. Today, the Flower Forest is a popular venue for weddings and events.
