Welchman Hall Gully: A Collapsed Cave Paradise

Welchman Hall Gully, located in the parish of St. Thomas, Barbados, is a captivating natural wonder that invites visitors to step back in time and experience the island's original landscape before extensive sugarcane cultivation. This unique attraction is essentially a collapsed cave, formed by the erosion of coral limestone over millennia, resulting in a dramatic, meandering ravine that shelters a diverse ecosystem. The gully stretches for approximately three-quarters of a mile, with a well-maintained, shaded path that immerses you in a lush, green paradise. Towering trees create a natural canopy, filtering sunlight and creating a cool, humid atmosphere filled with birdsong and rustling leaves. The gully boasts over 150 species of plants and trees, including nutmeg, clove, bamboo, and majestic palms. It is also believed to be the original home of the grapefruit, a hybrid of the sweet orange and shaddock. One of the highlights is the opportunity to observe Barbados green monkeys in their natural habitat. These playful primates, descendants of monkeys brought from West Africa centuries ago, are often seen swinging through the trees or gathering at the feeding platform. Visitors can also ascend a set of stairs near the entrance to a lookout point, offering panoramic views of the rolling hills of St. Thomas and the stunning coastline. Welchman Hall Gully's history is as fascinating as its natural beauty. It was once part of the Welchman Hall Plantation, owned by General William Asygell Williams in the 17th century, who developed the gully by planting exotic trees and an orchard. The Barbados National Trust acquired the gully in 1962, making it their first property on the island. The gully is geologically connected to Harrison's Cave, with the cave's collapse creating a unique environment for plant and animal life to flourish.
