St. John's Parish Church, located in the parish of St. John, is a captivating blend of history, architecture, and breathtaking scenery. The current structure, completed in 1836, stands as the fifth church on this site, following a series of devastating events including fires and hurricanes. The first church was speculated to be constructed in 1645, making it one of the oldest churches in Barbados. The Gothic-inspired architecture, with its crenellations, buttresses, and arched windows, makes it a striking landmark. Inside, the church features beautiful stained-glass windows and an elaborately carved pulpit crafted from six different types of wood, four of which are native to Barbados. Curved staircases flank the entrance, and a Westmacott sculpture pays tribute to Elizabeth Pinder. The churchyard offers a tranquil space with remarkable views and historical intrigue. Ferdinando Paleologus, a descendant of Constantine, the last Christian Emperor of Constantinople, is buried here. Another notable grave belongs to Thomas Hughes, who was buried standing up at his request. St. John's Parish Church is also home to one of only two intact sundials in Barbados.
