Discover more about George Washington House

George Washington House, nestled in the Garrison Historic Area of Bridgetown, Barbados, offers a unique journey into the shared history of Barbados and the United States. This stately Georgian-style residence, built around 1717, gained prominence in 1751 when a 19-year-old George Washington and his half-brother Lawrence resided here for two months. Lawrence sought the warm climate to treat his tuberculosis. This is the only country ever visited by George Washington, and this is the only house he ever lived in outside of the continental United States. Visitors can explore the meticulously restored rooms, furnished to reflect 18th-century colonial life. The ground floor showcases the parlor and dining room, while the bedroom features a traditional four-poster bed. The second-floor museum displays a collection of 18th and 19th-century artifacts, including medical instruments. Explore a section of the historic Garrison Tunnels, an extensive network constructed around 1820. Originally designed for drainage, these tunnels later served as escape routes for the Garrison troops. The site also features a gift shop and cafe.
