Discover more about George Washington House

George Washington House, nestled in the Garrison Historic Area of Bridgetown, Barbados, presents a unique and captivating journey into history. This beautifully restored 18th-century plantation house holds the distinction of being the only residence outside the continental United States where George Washington, the first President of the United States, once stayed. In 1751, a 19-year-old George Washington accompanied his ailing half-brother Lawrence to Barbados, seeking a climate to alleviate Lawrence's tuberculosis. The brothers resided at what was then known as Bush Hill House for about two months, a stay that profoundly impacted young Washington. George Washington's time in Barbados exposed him to new cultures, military strategies, and societal structures, which later influenced his leadership. He contracted smallpox during his stay and was nursed back to health in the house. The house has been carefully restored to reflect its appearance during Washington's visit, with the ground floor featuring period furnishings that offer a glimpse into the daily life of a wealthy Barbadian family in the 18th century. Visitors can explore various rooms and imagine the conversations and activities that once filled these walls. The second floor houses an interactive museum with exhibits on 18th and 19th-century Barbadian history, culture, and the transatlantic slave trade. One of the most fascinating aspects of George Washington House is its connection to the Garrison Tunnels. These underground tunnels, rediscovered in 2011, were constructed in the 1820s as part of the British military defenses. Visitors can embark on a guided tour of a section of the tunnels. The house is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
