Blackwoods Screw Dock: A Victorian Maritime Marvel

Blackwoods Screw Dock, located in Bridgetown, Barbados, is a unique and historically significant landmark. Constructed between 1889 and 1893, it stands as a testament to Barbados's vital role in Caribbean shipping and trade during the age of steamships. John Blackwood, a Scottish engineer, was granted the lease by the Barbados Parliament to construct the facility. The dock was formally opened on March 10, 1893. The dock utilizes a series of powerful screw jacks to raise a platform, allowing efficient and thorough repairs to vessels up to 1,200 tons. Ships entering the dock were carefully guided into position, and the process of raising the ship out of the water was a slow and meticulous operation.
