Speightstown Mural: A Tapestry of Barbadian Life

Located on the north wall of Jordan's Supermarket facing the beach, the Speightstown Mural is a stunning visual representation of Barbadian life. Designed by Barbadian artist Don Small in collaboration with John Pugh, this 80-foot long and 20-foot high mural uses the 'trompe l'oeil' technique to create a captivating 3D effect. The mural, also known as the 'Bridge of Tides', blends realistic imagery to narrate the story of Barbados. It depicts scenes from Harrison's Cave, the raising of the Barbadian flag at independence, green monkeys, chattel houses, and the island's original Amerindian inhabitants. Each element is meticulously crafted to reflect the diverse facets of Barbadian life. Speightstown itself provides a fitting backdrop for this historical mural. As the second-largest town in Barbados, it boasts a rich history as a bustling trade port. Known as 'Little Bristol' due to the influx of settlers from Bristol, England, Speightstown retains its colonial charm with well-preserved architecture and a relaxed atmosphere. The mural's location along the beachfront adds to its allure, providing a picturesque setting for contemplation and appreciation.
