The Independence Arch is a significant landmark located at the southern end of the Chamberlain Bridge in Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados. It was built in 1987 to commemorate the 21st anniversary of Barbados' independence, which was achieved on November 30, 1966, marking the end of British colonial rule. The arch is adorned with several national symbols that represent Barbadian heritage and culture. The pillars showcase the flying fish and pelican, along with the Pride of Barbados flower. Across the top of the arch is the island's Coat of Arms bearing the national motto 'Pride and Industry'. The broken trident, derived from the national flag, symbolizes the breaking away from colonial rule. Each column of the arch is inscribed with the National Pledge, a reminder of the nation's values. Bronze plaques depict the Right Excellent Errol Walton Barrow, a National Hero who led Barbados to independence. The Chamberlain Bridge, where the Arch stands, also has historical significance. Originally built as a swing bridge in 1872 and named after Joseph Chamberlain, it has been reconstructed over the years, most recently in 2005-2006 with a modern lifting design. Just east of the arch is Independence Square, a peaceful oasis in the city, featuring a statue of Errol Walton Barrow.
