Earthworks Pottery is more than just a place to buy ceramics; it's an immersive experience that showcases the heart and soul of Barbadian artistry. Founded in 1983 by Goldie Spieler, and now run by her son David, this family-owned and operated studio has become a cornerstone of the island's craft scene. Located in the tranquil hills of St. Thomas, away from the bustling city center, Earthworks offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness the creation of beautiful and functional pottery firsthand. As you approach Earthworks, you're immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere. The studio and pottery are located on a breezy hillside, boasting beautiful mosaic-tiled walls, demonstrating the endless creativity to be found within. Inside the unpretentious workshop, a friendly group of diligent potters practice this ancient art Bajan-style, producing rustic-chic ceramic wares in dozens of colorful patterns. The open workshop allows you to observe the entire pottery-making process, from the initial shaping of the red clay to the intricate hand-painted designs and the final firing in the kiln. What sets Earthworks apart is its commitment to quality and functionality. All of the pottery is made from durable stoneware clay and fired at high temperatures, making it food-safe, dishwasher-safe, and microwave-safe. Earthworks produces fully functional lines of dinnerware and serving pieces, mainly, in over 150 shapes and 36 patterns. You can find mugs, jugs, teapots, decanters, sushi plates, bread 'baskets', pizza platters, bowls in a range of sizes, soap dishes, vases, lamp-stands, candle shades, plant pots, signs and nameplates, jewelry caddies, desktop accessories and other odds and ends. Earthworks also does custom orders such as house names or house-numbers, bathroom sinks, splash tiles, accents or floor tiles, commemorative dinner sets, wedding presents and anything you can imagine. Beyond the pottery itself, Earthworks offers a complete cultural experience. The complex also houses On the Wall Art Gallery, which showcases the work of talented Barbadian artists and craftspeople. To complete your visit, be sure to stop by the Tree Top Café, located on a shaded verandah with stunning views of the St. George valley.
